Moving Home

Hi All, in a bit of a dilemma, our DD sits the 11+ this September, and we currently live in a rented accommodation. I know most schools say that we need to be resident of the address used to register to sit the test till 31st August 2018, to be considered under the designated area. Does it make sense then to move out end of September (we intend to buy our own home) or should we wait till the National offer Day which is in March, before making this move? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Berkshire is the first choice, however have registered her for some other schools in the wider selection like Nonsuch, and also the Buckinghamshire Test. Now considering whether she should take the Kent test as well. We have been looking to move to a town that offers a quicker commute into London.

Why are you thinking of taking the Bucks test? Your address is used for allocation of places should you child qualify; you appear not to be in catchment for any of them ...

I suggest you read the admission rules very carefully so you are clear which address will be used for school place allocation. Changing address will also mean your application will be scrutinised carefully.

Quicker than from where?

You do realise that Buckinghamshire grammar schools are all 'pass score then catchment, etc', as are most of the Kent ones? All the CSSE schools and Chelmsford County High School for Girls have places open to OOC applicants - Chelmsford or say Benfleet / Leigh on Sea (for WHSG / SHSG) can be less than an hour's commute into central London, Colchester (for Colchester High School for Girls) not. Depends how long your current commute is.

By Berkshire, I assume you mean the Slough schools, not Kendrick.

You’ll find links to the admissions pages for the Slough schools plus historic admissions data for them in the Berkshire section here

However if you are thinking Kendrick, you will need to be in catchment by the end of August before taking the test. Since catchment was introduced, no one from ooc has got place. Reading look very closely at address changes for all the schools in the area too.

You do not need to live in Kent prior to sitting the test. I know people who’ve sat the test, got the score and realised it isn’t amazing enough for an OOC place and then moved by the address change cut off in early December, proving all ties had been cut with previous property, and got an IC place at a Kent Grammar. Seems stressful to me for the whole family but just wanted to make it clear not all areas are the same and for Kent you do not need to be in Kent in August to be classed as IC. As others have said all areas are different.
