Does this exist or is it a myth?

My Dd is just nearing the end of Y10 and until last night I didn’t think that either school had a prom. She tells me that yes they do, just that the school doesn’t organise it.

So who does?

Do any of you wonderful parents have knowledge of previous years organising this event?

No personal knowledge of either school, but in many schools, the year 11 / year 13 prom is organised by the students themselves (obviously with the help of an adult if necessary, with the actual booking of the venue etc). It isn't an official 'school event' as such (although for DD's year 11 prom, the school finance office did process the payments for the tickets for those of us who preferred not to write cheques to an individual 16 year old).

Hi, my eldest finished about 5 years ago and my middle one just finshed her GCSE last week and prom is next week. The students with the help the parents organise it. So the answer is yes they do have prom

Many thanks Toadmum & Tommy, I had no idea that proms were orgnanised by students and parents.
Not quite sure of the next steps but I’ll talk to Dd to see if any of her friends have talked about organising anything yet.

Tbh, I'm sure she will tell you, as and when the organisation is in progress (or when the event is a
fait accompli ).

Slightly different schools but such things were arranged by members of school council and/or prefects at DCs' establishments.

Had a child at both.
CCHS definitely had a prom when my daughter was there ( now year 3 university). It was obviously mainly girls but they were allowed to bring male partners and my daughter took her best male friend from primary school.
Kegs has a spring ball in feb/ March for year 12s and 13s . The school is mixed in the sixth form and outside partners are also invited.
Both arranged by a committee of students with no staff involvement. I think some pta parents went along to the CCHS one to ensure no shenanigans.

Why do they feel the need to slavishly follow this American fad?

Organise a charity fund raiser instead - no need to dress up or spend crazy amounts of money.

I have a DC at both schools.

There is a joint KEGS/CCHS Year 11 prom. Last year it was in Hylands House and was organised by a CCHS mum and some girls. It was about £50 a ticket including a 3 course sit down meal and all drinks. Many pre-proms were organised, we went to one in a beautiful barn owned by some grandparents and photos were taken in the garden before cars left for the prom.

After prom is usually the 'event' everyone talks about and the parents worry over. Last year's was in a field near Epping and started at midnight until 4am. The partying starts there. Luckily DD had work experience in London the next day so there was no way she was going.

Y11 DS has refused to go to prom this year. So I have no idea of the details and my bank balance is a deal healthier.

There is a Y12 Charity Ball each Febraury that the Y12 charity committee at KEGS organise and the CCHS girls are invited to. CCHS also do a mini prom in Year 13. It is cocktail dresses rather than ball dresses.

Thank you to everyone for replying, I’m a little relieved that the students organise it mostly themselves. Not quite sure about any after parties though
