Challenge maths material

Post by Littlebird »

Hi all, could you be able to recommend any material for maths at challenged level. We have Eureka. This is for a yr6 child who naturaly loves maths and loves being challenged. Many thanks.

Have you looked at my thread?

There's plenty:

NRICH: https://nrich.maths.org/13827" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; look also for their curriculum map which links problems to what they are learning in school

Primary Maths Challenge: http://www.primarymathschallenge.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; [download free past paper]

UKMT: Some upper Primary students sit the Junior Challenge https://www.ukmt.org.uk/individual-comp ... challenge/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks Guest55, her school is giving her these at school already. Since yr2, they have been giving her small bits of challenged questions from these websites. I dont want to mix up. We had the meet the teacher and they said, they now have extended to ks3 challenged questions. Some questions can take her a whole week just to think and figure out and she really loves it. I now need books or more book type, something I could work with her, something challenged. This is more for her January Indie exams. I realised she needs it after couple of grammar school exams she mentioned few questions were hard and she had to guess. We basically just need to practise these.

They can't have given her some of these ... there are hundreds of questions!

Has she submitted her solution online on NRICH? Here: https://nrich.maths.org/8495" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are new questions she won't have seen before. There is no need to buy anything and please don't accelerate into KS3 as that is against all guidance.

UKMT has a publications section if you are determined to buy a book.

Alternatively some of Rob Eastaway's book could be sourced from a library http://www.robeastaway.com/books" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks so much for the robeastaway site, the books look like just the one we need. Many thanks. You are absolutely right about other sites, she cant possible do that many. I think there are a question or two every week and she is given some during the week. This year we had a fantastic maths head who even make the maths become arty, not too sure what does it means, she says the maths work becomes arty at the same time. To be honest, due to tricky childcare situation, we cant give her PC or ipad to explore the sites herself during the week and we dont see much during the week. I will print them out and stick to KS2 ones. We dont go ahead rather than dig deep, totally agree with you.

The NCETM website - free to register- has its Primary magazines with ideas for integrating maths into the curriculum. They had a series on artists a few years back and there is a lot of maths out there in the number of petals, growth of trees etc.

Plant some seeds and see which grow fastest. Why are the leaves on different sides of a plant different sizes?

There are loads of great ideas out there:

Look also for Forest school maths ideas.
