Preferences on CAF form

Post by psych mum »

I have 2 questions: what does it mean by age weighted adjustment of score?

If someone is filling 2 forms : Kirklees form for Heckmondwike, and Calderdale council form for CH and NHGS then how do they allocate places .. if someone doesn't live close to either of these then will these be separate preferences on separate forms.

Where we live we fill in one form regardless of which local authority the school is in. So we are filling in a form via the Lambeth website, because that's where we live, even though none of the schools we're listing are in Lambeth.

Have you checked your home LEA's website to see what it says about applying to schools in other areas?

You apply on the CAF of your own LA even if you are applying to schools in over LAs. The LAs all coordinate admissions between each other.

Age weighted adjustment just means they have look at the scores to see if there is any statistical differences between those of different ages eg September born vs August born. If there is, then they adjust the scores accordingly so there is no advantage or disadvantage due to age.

Each school will have a policy detailing how they will allocate places.

Thank you all, that was helpful.

If someone needs to choose between Heckmondwike and north Halifax grammar schools, any advise on preference based on experiences..

I think you’ll find most people would be happy with any of these schools. Unless you have a strong preference I would go with whichever is closest or easiest to get to.

If you have a preference for NHGS or CS then you should put those in higher preference than HGS. If you are guaranteed a place at HGS then you will be offered that if you don't meet the criteria for NHGS or CS.

As mentioned, you should apply via the Education Authority where you pay your council tax for all of the schools you are interested in, even if they are in another authority region.
