Bexley Grammar School or Beths Grammar Schools

Post by Bhassub »

Hi
My son got 218 in Bexley, we have following preference with schools but would like to know some details..
so parents who have opted for the below schools last year or planning to opt to the below schools as a preference this year, please provide your views...it will help us in making our decision

Bexley Grammar School :
What is previous year last cut-off mark?
What is better in BGS than Beths
Focus on sports?
BGS what they focus on and specialism?

Beths Grammar Schools :
What is previous year last cut-off mark?
What is better in Beths than BGS?
Focus on sports?
Beths what they focus on and specialism?

(we missed the open days for both the schools)

And we are outside catchment, planning to move in but would like to know what is likelihood of get either of the school if I move close to the school.

My son also scored good marks(368) in Kent, so also think of the above schools is Dartford Grammar Schools better than all.

Please share your views...as parent I need make correct decision so your views will help.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Bexley doesn't go by score but the top 180 has priority, the Council has published the distance cut off for the past few years: Beths was 6.9 miles as of June and Bexley was 2.2 miles. In addition, Beths has reserved 5% places for those receiving Pupil Premium/ FSM and who live within 10 miles radius. The closer you move to the more likely you may get an offer, but you need to check with the council about deadlines.

For DGS, last year's cut off score (OOC) was 384. Again if you decide to move IC you should check with the council when to move by.

They are all very good schools, I have named them all in DS2's application. It is really down to personal preferences and ease of journey. DS2 likes Beths the most due to its DT/Art/ Music Tech and a better looking PE kit, whereas DS1 liked DGS because of the science club.

Thanks ... how you would rank the above schools?
Of course child preference matters!!!
I couldn’t find one place where all schools in England is ranked based on
a) GCSE results
b) specialism( science or sports or tech focused)

Did you really ask your child to sit the Bexley test without any prior knowledge of the grammar schools it serves?? The open days will have given you a feel and answered many of your questions. They are all very different schools - only you can and your child can decide which would best suit your child. There are many previous Bexley school comparison threads.

Don't be silly, that would have involved some sort of research effort.

It's a familiar story all over the place now, with 11+ tourists driving about putting their kids through multiple exams with no prior planning as to what to do should they qualify. Then they pop up on here asking other people to make the decision for them.

Google ‘compare schools’ and that brings up tons of official data including gcse results and progress 8. You can either look at all schools, all schools within a radius or LA or schools you pick. But please don’t choose a school based on data, it is much more about fit for your child. Specialisms no longer officially exist. To check the curriculum you need to look at the schools you are interested in but also take into account subjects can get removed from the curriculum too.

Yes, the results for children 6, 7, 8 years ahead of your child are irrelevant really. Yours will be sitting entirely different exams to many of those, the teachers may well be completely different and the subjects available may change. Choose based on what you felt when you visited and how easy it is to get to.

Agree! Travel option is very important - DS1 has after school activities at least 3 times a week - so glad that he can make his way home fairly easily. KS3 curriculum will also be relevant, especially if you have a preference in a particular foreign language.

If OP is planning to move then hopefully he will also factor in commute options to work place, house costs and other facilities like supermarkets and primary schools for younger siblings.

Haha! :D That's true! ''11+ toruists'' is the right term for them. I've heard of DC doing crazy commutes to and from the Kent/Bexley grammar schools. I've heard of DC coming form as from Ilford and Romford to some of the grammar schools in Bexley and some from as far as Thurrock for the Dartford grammar schools whereby they commute to and from school using the ferry! ...... yes, the ferry and no I'm not joking!
