How to add fractions with different denominators

I would turn each into an improper fraction then add the two improper fractions together using a common denominator. Then turn the answer back into a mixed fraction if required.

Can your child add fractions with different denominators, using the concept of equivalent fractions? Can he/she add 1/4 and 5/8 by turning the 1/4 into 2/8?

The whole numbers should look after themselves.

Change 2 1/4 into eighths.

Then it should be straightforward to add the two fractions together.

* recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number (e.g. 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5)
* add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and multiples of the same number

I think you have more fundamental maths problems to address first. A week ago your daughter was 10.

I have tried to give a little breakdown if it helps your child.

2 1/4 + 3 5/8

a) turn each part into improper fraction

2 1/4 = ((2x4)+1)/4 = 9/4
3 5/8 = ((3x8)+5)/8 = 29/8

b) now add each improper fraction by making a common denominator

9/4 + 29/8 = 18/8 + 29/8 = 47/8

c) convert the answer back to proper fraction

Dividing 47 by 8 gives quotient of 5, and leaves a remainder of 7

47/8 = 5 7/8

OR

You could simply add the whole numbers separately and fraction part separately

2 1/4 + 3 5/8

(2+3) + (1/4 + 5/8)
5 + (2/8 + 5/8)
5 + 7/8
47/8 = 5 7/8
