The format of the Habs boys 11 plus exam Frid 4th Jan 2018

Post by Daogroupie »

The Habs boys exam on Friday 4th January consists of : English 1 hour 10 mins,(normal time) Maths 1 hour (normal time) and online VR\NVR 15 mins (much shorter than normal and very short to fit both NVR and VR in.

Anyone got a feel for the online VR\NVR and which of the publishers to compare it to?

Also how do Habs have enough computers available for all those in one session to do an online test at the same time?

Or are some taking English or Maths when others are sitting the VR/NVR?

There is only one day for the exams and the figure given by Habs is that around 600 boys apply, so how do they manage?

Do they have some having lunch while others are sitting the online test?

Thanks for any information. DG

Does it actually matter?! If a child knows they have had to prepare for all those elements, I can't see that they need to know what order they take - and assumably HABs have worked out how they will do it. Assuming 2 computer labs, minimum, with 30 computers in each, then 3 lots of VR can easily be fitted in in an hour (with changeovers) so that is about 180 tests per hour - if they have more computers it's even more, especially if they can cut the changeover times. It's likely that children will be put in a rotation (from an IT point of view that would be sensible anyway as having 600 on the network at any time is bound to cause some sort of upset!) But, as I said at first, does it actually matter? If a child is going to be thrown by a change in order, (which, with any IT test, could happen unexpectedly) then it may not be the right place for them...

from the schools website:
The school places great emphasis on the use of technology across the curriculum to support student centred problem based learning. The Computing and ICT Department is equipped with an extensive network of computers, based in two large purpose-built classrooms. An additional five computer suites and six laptop trollies are available throughout the school for use by boys and teachers.
