How many twelfths (11+)

Post by haniya11plus »

Afternoon guys

My dd is solving this question and she is confused whether she has to multiply 1/12*1 or not

Q:- by how many twelfths in 1 5/6 less than 2 1/4?

Thank you

I would just convert the fractions to twelfths, i.e.:

1 & 5/6 becomes 1 & 10/12
2 & 1/4 becomes 2 & 3/12

then it's easy to work out the difference in twelfths between the two numbers.

Hi, convert the whole numbers into 12ths as well. So,

1 & 5/6 becomes 1 and 10/12 and then add it to 12/12 to become 22/12
2 & 1/4 becomes 2 and 3/12 and then add it to 24/12 to become 27/12

Then you can subtract 27/12 from 22/12 and 2 & 1/4 is 5/12 larger than 1 & 5/6

My daughter finds these questions easier when she puts them into improper fractions.

1 & 5/6 = 22/12
2 & 1/4 = 27/12

its much easier to see the difference.
