Birmingham Grammar Catchment Area

Dear All

My DS currently in Year 4 wishes to take the 11+ route. Now we currently reside in Balsall Heath but may be moving to Moseley possibly before application for the exams.

Our preferred choices of school in order of preference are:
KE Camp Hill Boys, KE Aston, KE 5 Ways, Handsworth Grammar.

Now we only fall into catchment for Camp Hill Boys. Does this mean if DS does'nt make the cut off for Camp Hill but does for the other 3 listed schools he is unlikely to be given a place for those schools as we'll be out of their catchment boundary???

I am not sure that this can happen - are they not having the same cutoff score for all the schools (then the places are allocated on distance)? Or has that changed since I last looked at the presentation ?

I'm confused...

Looking at previous threads the cut off scores have always been higher for Camp Hill boys compared to the other Birmingham Grammars.

Your previous contribution implied that this will no longer be the case when the proposed catchment area changes.

Is this correct? Can you please clarify.

The actual score achieved (provided it is above the cutoff) is now not as relevant as where you live

Criteria for admission / Camp Hill
Applicants are required to sit an entrance test and must achieve the
qualifying score in order to be eligible for admission to the school. Where the
number of eligible applications for admission exceeds the number of places
available at the school, places are offered as follows:
1. Looked After Children / Previously Looked After Children who
achieve the qualifying score. Applicants in this category will be
ranked by test score and then by distance from the school.
2. Children attracting the Pupil Premium who achieve the qualifying
score and live within the school catchment area*. Applicants in this
category will be ranked by distance from the school.
3. If fewer than 30 places (25% of the PAN) are filled by applicants in
category 2, offers will be made to children attracting the Pupil
Premium who achieve the qualifying score and live outside the
catchment area, until a total of 30 children attracting the Pupil
Premium have been offered. If 30 or more places are filled by
applicants in category 2, there will be no offers made from this
category. Applicants in this category will be ranked by test score.
Where scores are equal, priority will be given to those with a sibling**
at the school; then by distance from the school.
4. Applicants who achieve the priority score and live within the school
catchment area*. Applicants in this category will be given priority if
they have an older sibling** at the school; then ranked by distance
from the school.
5. Applicants achieving the qualifying score. Applicants in this category
will be ranked by test score. Where scores are equal, priority will be
given to those with a sibling** at the school; then ranked by distance
from the school.

The presentation on that page is also very clear on the subject: a single qualifying score and a single priority score will apply across all the Foundation grammar schools.

I’m sorry to ask as I can’t see this information anywhere although I know it must be somewhere! How are the the qualifying score and the priority score defined please? I’m a bit confused as to why there are two relevant scores unless they are pp vs non-pp. Many thanks.

Hi per the link I am interpreting a child who falls into criteria 5 doesn’t have to get as high a score as a child in the catchment area? Is that the case?

If the ethos is to support Birmingham children why make it harder for those in the catchment areas? What would be the reasoning behind this?

I’ve probably misunderstood but if someone can clarify would really appreciate it?
