Oxford Colleges

Post by Pumpkin Pie »

How does one decide on which Oxford College to apply to? There are so many and they all look wonderful. Where do we start?

Any advice most welcome.

The open day is tomorrow and Thursday if your dc can get there.

Once dc has identified their subject look at the professors for that subject in each college and see what they are researching / their particular field of interest.

Apart from the academic side there's all the other things like staying in college for all years, style.of catering, a gym, 24hr library. etc. Write a list of things that are important to your dc. It soon whittles down the list.

But be aware that not everyone who is offered a place will actually get the college to which they originally applied.

The next couple of days is your best possible opportunity.

All the colleges will be filled with students that chose that college and will be able to tell you why.

They do have their own styles but it is the subject that is the most important thing, not the college.

Go and do some socialising in the colleges and see what you think.

Perfect weather to hang out in Oxford. DG

My step-ds applied to a particular college but with hindsight he wished he had just done an open application (he felt that applying to a particular college that it narrowed his application). Whether that bears any truth, we'll never know. However, he was turned down by Oxford and ended up at another uni. All's well that ends well though as he is at Oxford doing his PhD.

According to the admissions guy this morning open applications have dropped to about 19%.

Thanks everyone. She is there now at the open day in the sunshine, so Oxford at its best. Hopefully she'll get a feel for the place and enjoy her visit.

I thought pooling was there so you wouldn't loose out by applying to an oversubscribed college. Not sure how well it works though.
