Hi does any one know what percentage of kids in Kes come from state primary schools?

Its about 50%... Boys are from all areas of Birmingham.... A true melting pot.

You don't have to be in prep school to pass 11+.

Most of the prep school kids that pass the 11+ had specialist tutoring outside school and very strong parental support. You cannot rely on prep school alone to prepare your child for the exam.

But saying that, prep schools also have more funding and resources, so they can afford smaller classes and teach a wider syllabus. It is not a must but if money is not a problem and if you live near a good prep school, which are mostly in Edgbaston, I would say why not.

My son is at KES, i'd say the percentage is more like 20-25%. Not all kids from state are on a freebie at the school. Some parents dont see the need for Prep schooling, they send to state and work hard on their kids and then get them into KES.

The "about 50%" figure I posted was based on my sons KES class. 12/23 attended state school.
I dont think his class is exceptional in this regard and the figure will obviously change class to class.

Having to stress about finances for DS to go to prep school can be detrimental.... particularly if exta work hours are needed.... meaning parents spend less time with their little ones. Attending a state school with good tuition is by far a cheaper option but needs lots of parental support.

That said...our DS went to prep school as we had a small mortgage. Sadly not the case for everyone these days.
