No catchment school

Does anyone know what we do if our only catchment school was the RGS and now my son has passed the 12+ but the RGS has opted out of the 12+ admissions. Does the LEA have an obligation to provide a grammar catchment school to all its pupils.

Wouldn't have thought so. We are near Watford and do not have a grammar school (only The Watford Boys Grammar and Watford Girls grammar, but they are not actually grammar schools anyway, just in name only, most peculiar!)

No, because 12+ is not the normal point of entry. Places cannot be reserved for late admissions as it would be unlawful to do so.

RGS has opted out of the 12+ admissions.

Not too sure what is meant by "opted out". Is it that your son has passed their 12+ test (if I remember correctly, they run their own late selection test as a foundation school), but they are unable to offer a place because they're full?

What do you mean by a "catchment" school? What does your LEA admissions booklet promise you?

Legally, any LEA just has to provide you with a school place. Anything over and above that would be expressed in the LA admissions booklet (you should be able to read it online).

e.g. in Kent, an unusual authority, we still have an 11+ system LEA-wide. Anyone who passes the Kent 11+ test is guaranteed a grammar school place - but it could be many, many miles away from home.

Even our closest grammar schools (which we are not guaranteed a place at) are over 10 miles away.

To get a place at RGS at 12+ you have to sit their entrance tests - this is very clear in the booklet.

Have you been offered a GS place elsewhere?

The LA do not have to offer a GS place at 12+
