AGSB Appeal

Post by go2khurram »

Hi,

I hope someone could guide me here that the best approach to lodge an appeal. We are in OOC area living in Stretford and my son pass the AGSB test last year but unfortunately could not get the place. I have two other sons both are going to AGSB in year 7 and 8 and my youngest son also want to join their brothers. He got almost the same score my other sons got but due to the change in admission policy and catchment area, the school did not offer him the place. My son who is very bright in studied is a bit disappointed and upset especially when he is things at his elder brothers are going to AGSB and he will not. Thought he secure a place in Urmston but not seems to be very exciting because he really wanted to go AGSB.

As a parent It also hard for us to manage two different schools and would be easy for us if they all going together in same school.

I will appreciate if someone her helps me to prepare a better case for my appeal. I am a little bit nervous about what case I should be prepared for my son. The school does not have any sibling policy so can't use that point in my case.

Is there any professional available who can prepare the appeal on my behalf or do I have to do myself.

Thanks
Etienne

Hi

I've moved your post to Appeals as we can be of more help there.

We do not recommend using "professionals".

Read through our Q&As, especially:

There is a summary of an OOC appeal for AGSB on the feedback thread (top of page 16)

Hi go2khurram - it's my appeal Mandy has just linked to, I think, as we had an OOC appeal for AGSB last summer.

The Sept 2020 cohort is a newly large group (PAN of 220 ish where previous years were 180 ish) and it sounds as though competition was fierce yet again. In 2019 they admitted only 9 OOC children in the main round and the lowest qualifying score was 390 compared to the in-catchment qualifying score of 334. OOC children are ranked by their score - you can ring AGSB for the lowest qualifying OOC score and compare that to yours, but it will probably be sent through in the appeals paperwork.

I would recommend that you read through Etienne's excellent FAQ on appeals - https://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeals/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, mostly in category C which deals with oversubscription.

It is not usually recommended to use a professional to lead your appeal. We found the actual hearing as informal as it could have been, with the panel and particularly the panel chair helping us through to make sure we were fully heard and fully understood the process.

Bluntly, they don't care that your son would rather have got AGSB than Urmston. They don't care that it would be easier for you as parents for a few years. You need to work out how you show that AGSB is absolutely the best thing for your son, and what AGSB can offer that Urmston can't (any particular subjects that aren't offered at Urmston, or clubs that only AGSB offer?).
