Hi,

Are Burntwood school, Ernest Bevin, Graveney School grammar school?

I thought only grammar schools can select pupils based on academic ability.

What have I missed?

They are partially selective schools, meaning that some places are awarded on the basis of test score.

Can I say there are 3 types of state-funded schools.

1. Comprehensive school
2. Grammar school
3. Partially selective school

Comprehensive schools cannot select pupils based on test score.
Grammar schools select all pupils based on test score.
Partially selective schools select pupils partly based on test score, and partly based on other criteria.

Bit more complicated than that:

Comprehensive schools cannot select pupils based on test score.

some do testing and allocate pupils to bands to ensure that there is a equal number of places offered in each band,


Grammar schools select all pupils based on test score.

in some they are based on test score only regardless of distance, in others it is a case of passing the test and then it comes down to distance from the school

Partially selective schools select pupils partly based on test score, and partly based on other criteria

more that some partially selectives offer some of the places based on test score and the rest of the places on other criteria eg distance

Also non grammar schools that offer a certain percentage of aptitude places (e.g. arts/ music/ sport). The child who gets one of the aptitude places is guaranteed a place regardless of distance. The schools around us that have aptitude places operate a fair banding system so the distance furthest child admitted for each band can vary wildly each year.
