Books for Newstead

Post by interestedmum »

Hi, Just wondering if text books for new starters in year 7 need to be purchased by parents or whether they are provided by the school? - eg for Maths?

Thank you

The school provide them (no state school can insist that parents buy books as it is meant to be free at point of use). Of course there are lots of optional extras. However from Y8 I did buy DD the maths book as it was fat and big and heavy and saved her dragging it to and from school. It should also mean the book provided by the school isn’t in pieces and can be given to another pupil the next year. Whilst they have lockers, they often need the books for homework too.

Your DD will also be given lots of blank workbooks and ‘homework’ in first week is to theme them and sticky-back plastic them so do invest in a roll or two of sticky-back plastic and remember that a ruler is great at smoothing out the bubbles!

Do you think they'll still require sticky back plasticking now people are more aware of plastic waste? My older son's going into Yr 9 and when he joined year 7 (at a different school) we were told to plastic his books. We never did for year 8 though and no-one suggested it.

Haven’t a clue, but with hygiene considerations they are easier to wipe down for teacher marking and as we know plastic use considerations have generally gone out the window the coronavirus! At least it isn’t single use, it keeps the book fresh all year and saves waste that way. DD is about to go into Y11 but some of her friends had younger sisters join and depending on what teacher the sticky plastic was in evidence.
