Outside areas

Post by sonjyot »

Apologies if this question is asked earlier, What are the chances of outer area pupil to get in to SW consortium school? If performance is excellent, would it get consideration?

Parmiter’s has a few out of catchment places for the highest scoring in the test. Have a look at their website.

They appear to have changed this figure to 5%. I have no idea if that amounts to 3 places. I’ve always had my doubts about this figure though as the year my son started there were at least 5, all firstborns, on our bus alone.

Parmiters admissions policy for 2021 entry says:

6. 25% of places shall be available in merit order by reference to academic ability. In order to be considered
under this criterion, a verbal reasoning test and a mathematics test must have been taken, the results of which
will be used to assess academic ability. No minimum score will be required to gain admission, places being
offered strictly in descending order of each applicant's standardised test score. Preparation for the tests is
unnecessary. The tests are administered by the SW Herts Consortium (Parmiter's School, Watford Boys'
Grammar School, Watford Girls' Grammar School, Rickmansworth School, Queens' School, Croxley Danes
School and St Clement Danes School) and registration for the tests must have been made by the deadline.
Information about the tests and the arrangements, including examples of the questions, are available on the
school website: http://www.parmiters.herts.sch.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and the SW Herts Consortium website:
https://www.swhertsschools.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

7. Up to 10% of places to be allocated on the basis of proven aptitude in Music to be determined by
prescribed tests. In order to be considered under this criterion, a written test of musical aptitude and a
practical music assessment must have been taken.

PAN being 208, 25% is 52 spaces and 10%, 21.

I can't see anything in the above paragraphs which mentions a catchment area? Also, the two 'proximity' criteria - 2 and 8 - only mention 'straight line distance', no mention of a catchment that I can see. Have I missed something?

It used to say 3 out of catchment / county places - I forget which - on the website. Now there’s something about priority postcodes (Admissions - Year 7 Secondary Transfer - Priority Postcode Area).

Hmm... with zero mention in the actual Admissions Policy document, which just says, no minimum score, strictly in score order etc. Not 'Strictly in score order, with the first x places allocated to those in our Priority Postcode Area (see separate document / footnote)'. With the very detailed info in footnotes re the LAC category, the Governors can hardly have been concerned about overuse of bandwidth...

Toadmum, I'm afraid you missed this from later in the document:

For applicants who satisfy Criteria 5, 6 and 7:
95% of the places available will be allocated to applicants from the following post code areas:
WD3 to WD25; AL1, AL2, AL3, HP1, HP2, HP3 and HA6

So yes, 5% of the academic and music places (criteria 6 & 7) are open to those outside the priority postcodes - 2.6 children :? under the academic criterion!!

Criterion 5 is "compelling medical reason" which has no cap on numbers, so I don't know why they're applying the 95% to that!
