Help with maths questions from GL paper 9
Can anyone explain how to work this out:
Mr M measured the length of his garden. It was 20.0m to the nearest tenth of a metre. Between what limits was the actual length?
A. 19.95 to 20.04.
B. 19.9 to 20.1.
C. 19.995 to 20.004.
D. 19.5 to 20.4
E. 19.99 to 20.01.
Also this one:
A bag of apples weighs 2kg to the nearest 100g. Complete this statement: the actual weight of the apples in the bag is between [***] and [***}.
A. 1.995 - 2.005
B. 1.99 - 2.01
C. 1.95 - 2.05
D. 1.9 - 2.1
E. 1.5 - 2.5
TIA!

Re: Help with maths questions from GL paper 9
All the answers to the first one are wrong!
19.95 to 20.05 is correct
This is not 11 plus material ... it' called upper and lower bounds - the bounds are half the unit above and below; can you do the second one now?

I think answer to the first one is A.Mumof32018 wrote:Can anyone explain how to work this out:

"It was 20.0m to the nearest tenth of a metre" - means it rounds off to 19.9, 20.0, 20.1 etc..
So 19.95 to 20.04. If the value is 20.05, then it will be rounded to 20.1

Re: Help with maths questions from GL paper 9
Thank you very much. Really annoyed with GL. Not the first wrong answer or poorly worded question we've come across.
What do you mean when you say it's not 11+ material? Too hard? My son and I have been in a big tis as he got loads of this paper wrong. having got much higher scores on the previous papers. No wonder!
Is the answer to the second one 1.95-2.05?
Still not clear on showing it to the nearest 100g or, in the earlier case, 10th of a metre? Does that means how many decimals you need to show?

No - the upper bound is 20.05akb wrote:

Although, given that it's in the GCSE section, it really oughtn't to have to...?

Makes sense to me.akb wrote:

It's wrong and (b) makes no sense if that's what they are doing ...bridge wrote:Makes sense to me.akb wrote:

Re: Help with maths questions from GL paper 9
It's likely a printing error that was subsequently corrected.
In the most recent GL paper 9 (question 43), the answers are:
A 19.95 to 20.05
B 19.9 to 20.1
C 19.995 to 20.005
D 19.5 to 20.5
E 19.99 to 20.01
Therefore A is the correct answer. As to whether its an 11+ question or not, there is increasingly an expectation that the DC can work out these questions using a combination of KS2 knowledge (i.e. tenth of a metre = 10cm) and then applying that to the question.
