Dyslexia Diagnosis & Appeal Chance

Post by treacle1! »

Our child scored 346 in the Kent Test but failed the English paper (97). Our Headteacher said they would support an appeal as the result did not reflect ability, but I was fully realistic of chances.

During lockdown I had noticed some issues during home schooling, specifically to do with text retrieval and decoding words. The Kent Test result gave us even more reason to suspect our child may have dyslexia, especially as our child felt so confident they had passed. Our child's primary school has never mentioned this possibility to us, probably because they are performing well across the board and expected Greater Depth in all areas by end of Yr6. But there have been clues which put together would have indicated a potential problem.

Fast forward and we took our child for a dyslexia assessment, and they were confirmed positive. We don't have the full report yet but are expecting it to highlight problems with short term memory, slow processing speed and problems decoding words. So our child sat the test as an undiagnosed dyslexic. Our child still wishes us to appeal and my question is how much weight will be given to undiagnosed dyslexia? Is this an extenuating circumstance? Any other advice or tips? Many thanks!

Welcome to Appeals! :)

Yes, it would be taken into account.

It depends on what the report says, and how seriously the panel think that performance in the test was affected.
Similarly, processing speed. The panel will look to see just how low it is.

What matters most of all, though, is really strong academic evidence of high ability - and English is likely to be of particular interest in your case.

If the school is oversubscribed, you will need to put forward good reasons for wanting a place:
