Pate download papers: query

hi

sorry if this is a dull question but we're stumped trying to work out the answer to the following question on paper 5 question 9a of the Pate's download papers: grateful for any suggestions regarding how they arrived at the answer which is 1

mark the next number in each sequence

question 9a

216, 125, 64, 27, 8 (?) (1,2,3,4,5)

answer= 1

cube numbers.
1X1x1=1
2x2x2=8
3x3x3=27 etc....

thanks so much for the speedy reply!

It's obvious now you've kindly given the answer, but I wonder how many ten year olds know about cubed numbers? Perhaps it's just our state primary school that hasn't taught this to the year 6s yet - and I'm too old to remember :-)
