CGP Practice Test 3 / Questions 5 & 12
Question 5: (word making)
steep (teeth) worth -- bland ( ) face
Possible answers:
black
lane
lace
blane
lance
DS chose 'lane' but the correct answer as per CGP is 'lance'. I am not sure how this is possible as the word 'face' above is one letter short of the other 3 words in the question.
Question 12:
NH is to NT as NI is to ......
Possible answers:
NS
NU
OU
OS
MN
DS chose 'NU' but the correct answer is 'NS'. Again I am not sure what logic would get the answer 'NS'.
If the CGP answers were correct, can someone explain how?

Sometimes these q's really ar esent to try us.
Ok first one
steep (teeth) worth
the t is the second letter from steep
the e's are third and fourth letter from steep
th comes from last two letters of worth
so
second letter of bland is L
third and fourth from bland are AN
and last twop letters are CE
correct answer LANCE
It doesn't always matter that the number of letters is different.
your second question
NH is to NT as NI is to
well N to N is no move so the answer will be N
Your dd is right H to T is 12 moves so yes if you move I 12 moves you get U.
Not sure why this is wrong . The only otehr way I got NS was
N to H = -6
N to T = +6
but
N to I = -5
N to S = + 5

Dear Gilly
Firstly CGP are not NFER applicable so therefore do not necessary follow the standard rules. I do not recommend CGP for areas using NFER.

Teeth has been made using the middle 3 letters of steep and the last 2 of worth. Therefore the middle 3 of bland is lan and the last 2 of face is ce, making lance.

Instead of using the letters as individual letters ie N to N apply to N, then H to T apply to I [which would give the NS]
They have looked at the amount of letters in between each pair:

On question 5:
Yes, I understand that to get CGP's answer we need to take the last two letters from the word 'face'. No problems with that.
But the reason why DS chose 'lane' was because the logics that he learnt from couple of 'How to do VR ..' books, recommended to number the letters from the left and choose the correct numbered letters from the other side.
So far the above logic worked very well. We have seen questions where the number of letters in the words in the second part of the question are more than the number of letters in the words in the first part of the question. In this question the last word has one letter less than the others and that's what confused DS. I think I will ask him to change the logic when the words in the second part of the question has less letters.
May be they shouldn't have given 'lane' as a possible answer.

With two perfectly correct logics to get find the answer, in my opinion, CGP shouldn't have given both NU and NS together as possible answers.

I agree that they should really have just one available answer and I beleive in the real thing they do.
I came cross some papers that did have what appeared to be two very sensible answers so if my dd used one and it wasn't the one on the answer sheet but aslong as it was correct all the same I marked her correct. Otherwise I felt it dented her confidence and worried her about whether it would happen in the real thing which was uneccessary.
