Independent Schools in Gloucestershire

Post by silverflora »

Does anyone have any thoughts to make about the independents in Gloucestershire / Worcestershire that might help me to decide where to send my DD for entry at 11?

Also, I have entered her for scholarship exams ; do most people get their children tutored for these or is it fairly relaxed? I feel I ought to be doing something!

I'd be grateful for some comments please.

I would definitely get old of scholarship papers to practise for her. What schools are you interested in and do you need a scholarship/bursary?

I like the Ladies College and hope she will be invited back after the Entrance Exams to try for an Academic Scholarship. I have no idea what the standard is and if she is good enough - but should we be doing something to help her chances?

Re Test papers, which should I be looking at?

Is it worth getting a tutor - and do any of them specialise in this as opposed to Verbal reasoning only?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

This all depends on where your daughter is at school now and how bright you think she is. CLC is one of the most sought after girls schools in the country so the competiton is fierce. The chances of an academic scholarship are slim if she is at a state school, has had no tuition and is up against private school pupils. I think its probably worth getting your DD to sit some 11+ papers first and seeing how well she does - CLC may even have past papers to download online. If she doesn't do too well then I would suggest a tutor who tutors specifically for this school. If she's already at an independent school and doesn't do well in the past papers then I think CLC wouldn't be for her.

I would be rather put off Cheltenham Ladies College because the boarding houses are scattered around the town and the girls seem to have to walk relatively long distances to get to the main school. I think if I was paying all that money I would want to think of my daughter being safely on the school campus for all her activities, not crossing roads with maybe one or two other girls at the beginning and end of the school day, which will inevitably coincide with the rush hour. What about Malvern Girls College?

I understand your point KES parent but they are sheltered enough by being in a private school. My son is at a country boarding school and has very few skills when it comes to crossing the road or being aware of dangers. A town school at least helps them to live more in the "real world".

I am sure that if Silverflora wants her daughter to live in the real world there are more effective and economical ways of doing so than forking out £25K+ a year for Cheltenham Ladies College. There will be plenty of time for practising the Green Cross Code in the very long school holidays.

I knew you would say that, but thats not the point - we don't spend £25k for them to walk about fields. We usually factor in the schools ethos as the most important factor as well as academics and CLC is by far better value for money than Malvern, regardless of if it has X hundreds/thousands of acres.

Well, I don't really need to be told what parents of boarding pupils pay fees for, as my elder son was at public school. I would definitely not have been happy to know that he was wandering around town with all the attendant risks of traffic, stranger danger, and being beaten up by kids from the local comp (don't know if there is such a thing in Cheltenham!) You seem very well informed about girls' schools, Tipsy, for someone who has two boys.

I am well informed about most schools!  Malvern is not a girls school though, and I don't think I've offered much advice about girls schools - have I? :?
