Girls' Consortium question

Post by Reader »

Can anyone show me the easiest method for this one:

6 lollies and 3 ice-creams cost £8.52
3 ice-creams and 6 drinks cost £9.24
What would the cost of 1 lolly, 1 ice-cream & 1 drink be?

6 lollies + 3 icecreams = £8.52
6 drinks +3 icecreams = £9.24

Add the two sums together:
6 lollies + 6 icecreams + 6 drinks = £17.76

Divide by 6:
1 lolly + 1 icecream +1 drink = £2.96

I think.

I did that at first but I am slowly becoming wise to questions which appear to be algebraic but really just need a child's common sense approach!
