The Bond Issue

Post by Mike Edwards »

Hi

I think most people accessing the Wirral section of the site have read the ongoing issues relating to postings by Little Notes.

The Bond Issue is probably more pertinent to Wirral than any other area of the country as the original Bond books were written in the Wirral many years ago.

One of my colleagues recalls using Bond books when she was preparing for the Wirral Girls Grammar School test in the 1970's.

Little Notes refers to Bond publications and some people may think that because an experienced and knowledgeable tutor uses them then they should also use them.

Unfortunately Bond VR books have not moved with the times and although they were relevant to the Wirral 11+ a number of years ago, they are no longer because of the significant difference between their content and the content of the NFER 11+. This comment does stand up to scrutiny. And the same can be said for Athey publications.

There is an obvious need on the Wirral for parents to be better informed as to which publications are most relevant to the Wirral 11+ tests.

As an example of moving with the times Susan Daughtery is a renowned publisher of 11+ materials, her initial sets of books were written when the 11+ was similar to the content of the Bond books. However, recently she has introduced the Bright Sparks series of books that cover the 21 question types that we refer to on the Wirral.

Furthermore new publishers such as IPS have recognised that the 11+ material available for Buckinghamshire (Wirral and Bucks have the same format tests) was not relevant and they have produced material that has filled a gap in the market.

Other contributors to this site also recommend material that has been published in collaboration with elevenplusexams.co.uk.

Bond Assessment & Wirral

Post by Guest »

The full facts about the Wirral eleven plus exams have been on this website's 11 plus regions section for many months:

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/11-plus-wirral.php

It plainly states that there are 6 more types of questions than the normal NFER papers found in the shop (which contain 15 types). The recommended list does not include Bond Assessment material for the plain reason that these are wholly out of date.

Hi

The following observations are based on the Verbal Reasoning content of the Bond book "The Parent's Stress Free Guide to the 11+", published in 2006 by Nelson Thornes.

The comparisons made are against the NFER familiarization packs provided to parents by Wirral LEA. The observations are relevant to Buckinghamshire and any other LEA that uses the same NFER format.

Firstly, the questions in the book are all standard format, whereas the Wirral LEA test is multiple choice.

Second, the book covers all areas of the 11+ including Non-verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and English. These subjects are not relevant to the Wirral 11+.

On page 4 of the book the publisher claims "using this manual will ensure your child receives the best preparation in order to pass the 11+".

If you are a Wirral parent the above statement probably does not apply to you.
