The right of parents to send their children to grammar schools in neighbouring counties is under threat. This issue was raised in The Sunday Times, 25 January 2009, and the Telegraph, 26 January 2009. Please attach press links on this subject as you see them.
This has nationwide implications and is a serious threat to the remaining grammar schools. Talk to your MP.

I don't think so, andyb. As I said in another post, if a county or LA needs to complain about this then perhaps it should be looking at its own school provision and asking itself why parents - especially where bright children are concerned - go to all the trouble of applying elsewhere. However, what I do think is that it's simply a ruse by the government to impose its nasty anti-grammar agenda by getting a quango to do its dirty work.andyb wrote:Are there really so many out of county applicants that the comprehensive system is undermined? I don't have any figures but I would have thought not.

There was an interesting study published a few months back by the Sutton Trust. Some of the findings are pertinent to this issue, e.g.
- Only 17 of England’s 100 most socially selective schools are grammar schools.
- Nationally, the analysis finds that about 20% of grammar school pupils come from outside the Local Authority of the school; for some Local Authorities, this figure is as high as 75%.
- The study also finds that schools that lose pupils to grammar
schools are performing no differently from other similar schools in academic terms.
- Local Authorities do not form neat, self-contained selective systems...
(in) some apparently selective authorities more than half their grammar school pupils originate from outside their borders.
I don't have a link to the full study but the summary publication can be found here:
