£118,644 gross cost

The £70,000 cost is after tax. The pre tax cost (assuming 40% taxpayer and 1% NI) is £118,644.

we put our daughter through private school and it did work out at around £70,000 + - trouble is every year the annual cost jumped £600 (at least) so trying to working out a budget at the start of the whole procedure was pretty pointless!

Needless to say the joy of cancelling that direct debit when she left last year was huge!
I am not saying the education wasn't excellent - she is a very grounded, sensible and lovely girl with some great friends.
It's just the pressure of that payment, which you can't simply stop because it's a tough month, has now gone and it is a relief.

Reading the Telegraph article, I couldn't work out why there were less children in Gloucestershire taking the test than in previous years. We were expecting the exam hall to be flooded with children from the private schools, yet there were no more than usual.
