Thank you :D. We've got most of the warm clothes because we were hoping he'd end up up North, so much of the warm stuff he got for his 18th, but as for the rest ... He hasn't yet been allocated his room - might be sharing :(. I hope he hasn't missed something he had to fill in straightaway.

Once I've spotted a mistake, I have to do something about it.

Didn't know there were many shared rooms left except St Andrews ( & that was a few years back) oh and Edinburgh did one year when they had massively over offered. Was awful, like a prison cell where single rooms had bunk beds put in. Think they'd added a desk but one wardrobe and no floor space. Not sure any of my DCs would have coped.

Durham?

Quite a high percentage shared rooms in some of the colleges. DS1 didn't look there, but the accommodation (low percentage self-catered as well) put DD off. Until I started hanging out on TSR, it had been her heart's desire to go to a university where she could live in a castle  .

DD shared in her first term at Durham. She was gutted when she found (as was I) out but actually it worked really well. The room was huge and in those first few weeks she had someone to go to breakfast with, go out/stay in with and genuinely become close too. Both girls said that on reflection it had been great and they have remained very close, despite being in different friendship groups. Specifically it meant that if they just wanted to chill they could do so without appearing anti social if they wanted to their room was the centre of 'gatherings'. Both felt that if they had not got on, they would not have realised until term was over halfway through so really it would not have mattered.

Good that at Durham they have the space not to be right on top of each other ( unlike Edinburgh).
Mad?, Was it first term rather than whole year she was sharing? ( Just interested!)

St Andrews still has some shared rooms for first years in the older, oversubscribed and very central halls.

Extremely popular with Americans who seems to expect a "roomie" when they go to "college".

Lots say they want to be there and are happy to share but end up in single rooms further out.

I would have hated sharing. DS isn't too bothered but he might change his mind if they don't get on that well.

First term only. The college (not Castle) had a system where by ballot people were picked to share 1st term and then they sought volunteers for 2nd and 3rd term. In the event that there were insufficient volunteers then they would have had another ballot, excluding those who had already shared so no-one HAD to do more than one term. On reflection DD felt 1st term was best, it meant that she had the benefits of sharing and even if she had not got on with her room mate this would not have been evident until the whirlwind was almost over. A few people chose to continue sharing. They managed to get enough volunteers for the other terms, but not easily. The issue of course at this stage the benefits of sharing are less apparent/useful, and DC probably already know who they like/dislike.
DD had decided against Edinburgh/St Andrews as choices she was determined not to share. I agreed with her so the room situation was a disappointment at first. However with hindsight, given the choice again DD would opt to share 1st term term. She did mention one 'pairing' where different noise/socialising habits became a problem early on, the students, supported by the college JCR, arranged a swap very quickly. Good luck. Feel free to PM if you want more detail happy to help.

Sounds delicious like miss mad? got the best of it in the end.

I had to share in first year ( many moons ago) and was disaster due to keeping very different hours and me not being happy with her entertaining men at all hours... Thankfully she decided I was unreasonable and found a room elsewhere and I got hauled in to see head of hall for a telling off. But I had a lovely big room for the rest of the year!

Ooh, that's good news that they share for just a term. Like you say, first term is best.
