Question about results letter - In Lincolnshire

We have just received our letter to say daughter has passed the test and is eligible for a place at the grammar school.

It then goes on to say that places have been offered to all children in last 5 years based on the following criteria: lived in catchment area, attended a feeder school , put school as first choice , had a sibling attend the school etc.

It then says we would strongly recommend that in order to guarantee daughter a place, you must now complete the caf and send it into the education authority by the deadline date.

My query is, because we are not told the scores , we have no idea if the pass was borderline, good or excellent.

Because the letter says strongly recommend, does this mean she did very well in the test or does it mean that a lot of children passed the test , so they are oversubscribed, so therefore , they are saying you had better get your application in quick with us as first choice to even stand a chance.

We are not told the number of passes in or out of catchment, or indeed the scores either.

Just wondered if anyone else had received similar letters in the past, and if they had figured out what they meant, and in the end did anyones children receive a place.

You should always put the schools on your CAF in the actual order that you prefer them.

It shows that the school puts all the children who name it anywhere on their CAF in a ranking order according to the school's published admissions criteria. It doesn't make any difference to your daughter's rank whether you put the school first or last on your CAF. But if you do put it lower down on your CAF and you're offered a place at a school higher up, you will never get an offer from your actually preferred school.

The schools don't know where on the CAF you have put their school. The letters from the school are just to remind you that if you want to go to the school, you should name it first.

Sorry for the late reply but I believe that all schools in Lincolnshire who use score order as part of their admissions policy do give the score in the results letter. Look at the admissions policy for the school that you are applying to and check. Incidentally, most schools, even those who do not use score order, will tell you the score if you ring them and ask.

We didn't realise that the schools didn't know where you put them on the CAF. We always thought if you didn't put them as first choice, they didn't want to know. I guess putting where you really want to go as first, is the best option. DD is out of catchment for the grammar school she wants to go to, about 13 miles out, but we will give it a shot and see.


Just an update, she got in out of catchment , so worth while taking a chance.
