Tiling floors / area questions
When answering a question which asks how many square tiles are needed for a certain area of floor space am I right in telling DD to visualise the space and work out how many tiles can be laid next to one another horizontally and then vertically? She tends to want to try and work out the area in a sum but I assume this is more of a practical maths question?
Re: Tiling floors / area questions
Your way is the correct one and is quicker - working out areas can go wrong. Sometimes a quick sketch helps with the visualisation.
Re: Tiling floors / area questions
Thank you. This is what I thought re working out the area. DD and DS for that matter tend to go at it using a more numerical method as opposed to using the information given and applying a more practical approach.

When it gets to cutting circles out of metal or paper there are gaps. Finding areas is also more work!
