My sons' school organises it and they all take part. My eldest did it in year 10 and really enjoyed the expedition. It was a great laugh! He built his own computer and had a sport which he already enjoyed. The volunteering part was tricky as he wanted to really be useful. He tried at one place and he wasn't given much to do. So, he thought he was more a hindrance than a help. He changed and was happy to make a difference.

All very valuable as he learnt many life lessons.
