I must admit that we have been a bit naive in our approach to secondary education. Our son attends a fairly successful local authority school, he gets a lot of support at home and has always done well.

We hadn't really given much thought to secondary school but now it has become very apparent we should have been making plans.

Our son has just started his final year of primary school.

He achieved the following grades in his pre-sat testing:

Maths 5C
Reading 5C
Writing 4B

We have a local grammar school which holds it's entrance exam in just under a month, is this too short a time to prepare him?

Where do we even start?

You need to say which area you are in and schools you want, and then the experts can help you. It is different for each area!

I am going to run him though some practice papers this weekend before making a final judgement on whether or not to pay for some intensive tutoring.

We haven't been able to find any guidance on the average pass mark for our chosen school. They take the top 120 test scores so we understand this will vary from year-to-year but a guideline would be helpful for accessing where we are at the moment.

Okay so we picked up the CGP Study Books for Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning from our local bookstore. We have also ordered the CGP English Study Guide from Amazon and hope to get it early this coming week.

We timed DS on the Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning benchmark tests and he achieved the following:

Maths - 92% (36 questions in 40 minutes)
Non-Verbal Reasoning - 72% (36 questions in 20 minutes)

He finished his maths with 15 minutes left to go, which he then used to double check his answers. The non-verbal reasoning took him the full 20 minutes.

I would suggest that you don't bother spending too much time on trying to find a tutor at this time. (They have probably booked all their spare slots as extra sessions for their current tutees.)

Work on going through the techniques.
