Which would you choose SHSG or WHSG? (sixth form)-decision

Post by fairycake2018 »

I hope it is ok to post as I know there are so many knowledgeable people on here. If you had the choice of Southend High School for Girls or Westcliff High School for Girls for sixth form which would you choose and why? Need to decide by tomorrow.

Any personal experience of going to the school would also be great.

Thank you.

DS1 moved to SHSG for sixth form and did well there. He already had several friends there in his own year and the year below and made more whilst there.

DD was at SHSG from the last week of year 7 to the end of year 11, but for some reason, decided that she wanted to move to WHSG for sixth form. We live only a mile from WHSG and she said that she was looking forward to an 'easier' journey to school. However, although she said that she wasn't actually unhappy at WHSG, she realised (sadly too late on in the first term for even the very accommodating SHSG to take her back) that she really would have been happier if she had stayed put. Even now, when she is home from university, it is mainly friends from her time at SHSG with whom she socialises. I don't know what the shool is like under the new(ish) HT, but under ther previous two, at least, SHSG seemed to have the image of being very friendly and rather quirky.

But others we know love WHSG and wouldn't / haven't moved for sixth form. I don't know what the new HT there will be like, but I did like the outgoing one. Hadn't really warmed to him on previous visits until DD and I went to the 6th form open evening and he explained for the benefit of those not familiar with the term Russell Group that it was a group of 24 universities that liked to think of themselves as better than the others, but were not necessarily (examples then given of red hot non-RGs to choose for specific courses).

Where would your DD be moving from?
