Not sure exactly what you mean, but the bottom line is:
You apply for whatever state school(s) you want, wherever they may be, in the order of your true preference, on the CAF of your home authority.
Your home LA passes your requests (via the relevant other LA if not all your preferences are "home"ones) on to all the schools you name, along with all the relevant information that the schools need to make their decision as to whether they can offer your DC a place. This does not include where you ranked the school on your CAF.
Each school assesses whether or not it can offer your DC a place, according to the school's priorities, and feeds this decision back to your home LA (via the school's LA if this is different).
Your LA then looks at all the schools which say they can offer your DC a place. Out of these schools, the LA then allocates your DC a place at the one which you put furthest up on your CAF. e.g. you rank 4 schools, but only school B and school C can offer a place; your LA then allocates your DC a place at school B, because you ranked it above school C.
On the question of your DC's ranking in the selection test, it is only relevant up to a point, because it is unlikely that the first 96 in the test for a particular school will actually have put that school as their first choice, also people do turn down their first choice state offers for independent schools.
