How to do this question easily for a Y5 student?
Can anyone help with this question?
Thomas, Junaid and Sara received a total of £75. Thomas received £8 less than Sara but £5 more than Junaid. How much did they each receive?

1 put them in the right order. S most, T middle, J lowest.
2 give them each an equal share. 25 each.
3 give 5 from J to S. Now they have 30, 25 & 20
4 Sara needs another 3 for the 8 difference to T. But the difference between J and T mustn't change.
So start by T and J giving 1 each to S. And see how it looks
Sara 32
Thomas 24
Junaid 19
It looks right.

Thank you very much!

Alternatively start from the bottom up:
Give Thomas £5, Sara £13 and Junaid £0
That's £18 given out, leaving 75-18 = £57 left
Divide that £57 equally = 3x19 then the result is the same as KaB£H1s3 £19, £19+5, £19+13
