Help please on code question
This is taken from a CGP GL paper and I think there’s a misprint.
Have misplaced the answers!
If the code for CHAP is XSZK, what is WVZU the code for ?
A) dead
B) deaf
C) deed
D) blue
E) blot
Thanks

Re: Help please on code question
Thanks for your reply
For the first letter X to C it’s +5
So I apply the same rule to the first letter W . Which gives me B
I’m clearly doing something wrong ?

Re: Help please on code question
You need a backwards alphabet: (or alphabet written in one long line and then backwards underneath)
AZ
BY
CX
DW
EV
FU
GT
HS
IR
JQ
KP
LO

Brilliant thank you. Would you recommend that DC has to learn these backward pairs so they become more recognisable?
Many thanks

Re: Help please on code question
I don't think anyone learns the pairs just recognises that it might be a solution to the particular question.
I spotted this one as the third letter A in CHAP was matched up with Z in XSZK.

Re: Help please on code question
Yes, my DS learnt them as 'mirror pairs' and had a mnemonic for each. Such as 'anger zone', blue yacht' etc. It just made them easy to remember and tripped off the tongue by the time he was ready to do the exam. Just make up your own memorable ones, it's good fun.SleepyHead wrote:Brilliant thank you. Would you recommend that DC has to learn these backward pairs so they become more recognisable?

Re: Help please on code question
I think you are overthinking this particular example. Z appears in both codes which discounts three options. Of the two options left one has the same letter twice (dead) but the code has 4 unique letters therefore "deaf" is the only real option. Start with the obvious before breaking out the whole alphabet would be my advice.

Good advice, re excluding the impossible answers - actually thinking about it, that is how I would have done it when I did 11 plus.BucksBornNBred wrote:I think you are overthinking this particular example.
