I may be wrong but as I understand it: If there are multiple candidates with the same score (if 332 was the cut off for being offered a place for example) then those living closest get priority if there isn’t space to take all of the boys with that same score.
This isn't the case with all other candidates. Places are offered strictly by exam mark with no reference to where the child lives at all but when it comes to the last few spaces, if they have (for example) 10 places left but 17 boys all with the same score of 332 then the 10 boys living closest get the last places and the 7 boys living furthest away narrowly miss out. Distance is just used as a tie breaker where the last few scores are equal and there isn’t room to admit all of the boys on that cut-off score
