Schools will offer guidance on the tutoring question. Being familiar with the selection process is an essential for children, so they can enjoy it and present themselves naturally and feel they have some say in whether they would be happy there. I know this may seem controversial here; IME a school of any worth will counsel against tutoring, they can spot potential and fit. We have always gone with what schools advise and been happy with the outcomes.

However I accept that some will feel a responsibility to tutor. Why not, as long as your child is getting a sense of control from it, and it helps them relax. and do their best? If the point of tutoring is not clear to a child e.g. they have not fully bought into the school, the single-minded effort involved can become irrelevant.
