Hi mh1,
I am assuming that your child is 6-7 and may have an understanding of the 3 times table and division. I always taught my boys fractions once they were confident at multiplying and dividing, and then fractions were seen as a way of dividing (which is the case).

Were we to use cakes or chocolate, I have a feeling items will go 'missing' during the explanation. Imagine them trying to answer fraction question and trying to factor in missing slices/pieces that disappear off the plate.

Thank you for all the replies.
Very informative.
OK collective response to all the posts:
I think a good starting point is to work on the 3 times table and then we can tackle division.
Why is a 7 yr old child doing worksheet in the holidays? Because dad is feeling extremely guilty as he has ignored maths for the the past school year and instead has concentrated on reading books (school and library once weekly only).
Also I feel son benefits from 1-1 thoroughly enjoyable and productive short maths sessions with funny dad
