Appeal or not to appeal for WHS First Preference?

Re: Use of solicitors etc in appeals
Thank you Etienne. I always thought I was reasonably bright but I was a bit confused last night -and I hadn't had any alcahol!
NVR scores in Nfer and BAS II
One of my arguments for WHS is that my daughter has greater strengths in maths/ict specialisms which are less reliant upon language skills (as she has issues with data processing/tracking and so wears blue tinted glasses to stop words jiggling on page etc). She has 140+ Nfer and 121 on Progress in Maths Nfer and scored 16.3yrs on Matrices (NV) versus her actual age of 11 years on BAS II at Dyslexia Research Trust.
Is this info a strong support for Maths and ICT skills and likely determinant of future ability

Re: NVR scores in Nfer and BAS II
In view of the emphasis in their prospectus -
121 is so-so in this context, but 140+ and 16.3 years are excellent. It would help to have a high level 5 prediction for KS2 maths, and perhaps a letter from the primary school mentioning enthusiasm for the subject.
- I would have thought this a very reasonable argument for an oversubscription appeal, although it will be for the particular panel to weigh it up in relation to the strength of the school case (and of other appellants' cases).Britain has skills shortages in maths, science and information technology. In particular, too few bright young women are choosing degree courses which lead to careers in these areas. We want to increase the number of girls who go into these areas, as well as providing all our students with confidence and skill in mathematics and information technology, whatever their later careers

Re: Appeal or not to appeal for WHS First Preference?
Etienne. I have a slight problem I wanted to ask you about. The school gave me an excellent letter of support for DD's 11+ appeal. BUT it is school policy NOT to give letters of appeal for specific schools as our area is non-grammar and they believe it is inappropriate, as they do not support the grammar school system as such. It does say in the 11+ appeal letter that they predict high level 5 in Maths but they have not mentioned interests etc in that context. Given that it will highlight her having 'missed' her 11+, would I be better using the letter, which is glowing about her, but not about specifics and does mention high level 5 in maths or will fact that she got appeal and perhaps 'should be grateful', act against us, and so I shoudl not sue letter. Would welcome your advice, please. Thank you
Re: Appeal or not to appeal for WHS First Preference?
Seems a bit illogical to provide support for an appeal that is specifically against non-qualification in the 11+, but not when trying for a school that has maths as a specialism!
Anyway, not much one can do about that ...... apart from explaining to the appeal panel that you would have liked the primary school to write to them about your daughter's passion for maths - but they won't do it because they're opposed to the 11+.
I don't honestly think a panel would discriminate against you for qualifying via an appeal, and they would be asking for trouble if they did! However, one can never be sure what might be going on at a subconscious level, so it might be worth considering alternatives. For example, is the last school report very complimentary about maths?

Re: Appeal or not to appeal for WHS First Preference?
No -it is not bad but it does not say anything good about her maths. DS is not a star performer at school type maths...it is only at Explore since she did the NRICH programme that we have seen that 'the thinking outside the box' maths whihc is more challenging seems to suit her. I think we will have to use her 11+ appeal otherwise we cannot show she is expected to get high level 5. I am assuming that a cut and paste job would look worse than just providing the actual letters: ie it would look like we have something to hide.
I have tried talking to her teacher but she says the school/governors are adamant and actually they don't believe in 11+ appeal letters so I was lucky to get what we did anyway, it appears!

Agreed.I am assuming that a cut and paste job would look worse than just providing the actual letters: ie it would look like we have something to hide.
You could try and make a virtue of necessity - briefly express appreciation of the appeals system which took into account your daughter's data processing/tracking problems and her alternative strengths (e.g. in maths). Now you are appealing for a second time - to try and get her a place at the school that would best meet her needs ........

Thank you...I agree. But I am SO hoping that we get this on waiting list...The thought of going to appela again against lots of other mum's that feel the same way for their kids, makes me want to weep Etienne. I can't think of a better way, but...
