hi Etienne just want to update you on the appeal. I went in to school today, i had been thinking all weekend what i would say to convince them to help me through the appeal. The head at the begining of the meeting said she was going to contact me in regards to considering a appeal for ds. I was glad they were going to back up ds as they were convinced he had the ability and the academic levels , but is just below in english writing which they thought he will achieve a 5c/5b at the end of the year.he is 4b/4a in this so he should make 2 sub levels. now that i have the school behind me and i need to ask the doctor for a note to support /confirm his medical conditions, will i have a chance .
Also how long have i got to get the evidence together. thanks

edit
by the way hes been put down as 1:2 but they feel the 2 has changed in the past month or so to 1.

I can't say!
I don't know exactly what the head is going to write, what sort of recommendation she's going to give (e.g. a 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 2:2), whether her overall recommendations will appear reliable to the panel, how wide-ranging your academic evidence is going to be, whether there's any evidence from the school that your son seemed upset at the time of the news of your medical condition .....
Also how long have i got to get the evidence together
You should return the selection appeal form to the Appeals Team within 10 school days of the notification date on the top right hand corner of the form - but if you're not ready with all your evidence, there's nothing to stop you sending off the form saying "Evidence and full details of case to follow".

Late evidence should normally be sent in at least 10 days before the date of your hearing in January/February.

Good luck!

i just wanted to ask , we have been given a pack from the school for appeals , it mentions there that we have ten days from the letters sent out to reply for the appeal. This gives us in total 5-6 days to get all the paper work sent, this is not enough time as our school is closed today due to strikes and i canot get in contact with them in regards to questions answers.
our gp has also gone on leave till friday so i ca not ask for a letter of support untill next week . is it not better if i have all the info sent at once as they have more time to go through them.
Also i told the school head about ds medical condition briefly, but i dont know what the gp will write should i write a summary of what i said to the teacher and show that to the gp so he can pinpoint what i have mentioned to the head. Im sorry for asking these questions but i dont know who else to ask thanks.

You can complete the form and state that the evidence ie the paperwork will be available at a later date - that is what most people do at this stage.

thanks for the reply i also forgot to mention that the head will be sending her paper work but i have not had the doctors letter yet what if both these letters state diffrent things . what i mean is that that the gp does not know about the extinuating circumstances that occured, should i let him know about this so he can put in the letter that this had impacted on his performance. eg more stressed and lack of sleep and lack of concentration. thanks

The GP can really only write about what he has seen ie that you have previously discussed possible OCD and allergies and also any associated problems that you may have discussed around the time of the exam or before.

You can imagine GPs get asked to write many letters for a variety of circumstances - it is often only then that they learn retrospectively about events that went on or an illness or the effects of the illness.

Ends up with writing something to the effect of:

"Master K has consulted me in the past about condition x and condition y, Mr K tells me that during the time of the exam Master K was stressed and not sleeping well and lacked concentration"

which is not as helpful as:

"Master K has consulted me in the past about condition x and condition y, Mr K brought him to see me shortly before the exams and I noted that Master K was struggling with sleep and concentration both as a result of condition X for which he is on medication. We also discussed the recent specialist appointment he had for condition y which is still undergoing investigation. I suspect that these 2 conditions may have made it difficult for master K to concentrate fully and he may have been troubled by persistent itching / sneezing."

Did you see the GP round the time of the exams? have you written to explain what you need?

yes i did but i have not spoke to him as he was not in today but i left a message so hopefully tomorrow morning.
is it better for me to see him personally as to what i need, can i do this as you only need appointments if your ill, not for writing letters.

Also a friend of mine is in the same position she has not been on this site but wants me to ask if having a letter from the solicitors who knew and helped her through cicumstances that happened to her ,will help for her own appeal.

Do not get too distracted by this - concentrate on showing the academic attainment is high.

What leveks at KS1? What levels at the end of Year 5? Any other evidence e.g. CATS score, reading age ...
