Mind used mindstorm in its very early days and loved it ( all went on to technical/ scientific subjects). Think its a tried and tested option that encourages imagination as well as problem solving and logic.

DS has enjoyed using his and still gets it out at age 16. We asked everyone in the family to contribute towards it for a birthday present one year as it is pricey. The only frustration is that we haven't been able to source some of the extra bits he would have liked to go with it. If she likes building as well as programming I think it would be ideal

DS (Y7) and DD (Y5) enjoy programming - python, Java and Scratch - and they also have Mindstorm Ev3. I would say that general programming on a desktop or laptop is easier to get into than the Mindstorm. DC thoroughly enjoy completing the documented robotic projects or minor variations but they still haven't really experimented with their own algorithms. In fairness, real robotic design and programming can be quite challenging and time consuming and both DC are still quite young and very busy bees so they probably haven't had sufficient time.

The Mindstorm may suit your DD since she's a bit older, so probably able to apply herself a bit more, and sounds like an engineer. In terms of costs, I notice that the Mindstorm Ev3 is currently on offer online for £215 at a major supermarket chain.

Thanks nyr for that tip - not only is that supermarket offering EV3 for £215, there's also a £10 off evoucher on the website which can be redeemed against it. Absolute bargain!!
