Re: Grammar School Education
Thanks KS10 - very helpful and yes I can imagine going over it and making more corrections quite time consuming actually. I found this online which explains the benefits...
'Peer assessment is basically students marking other students' work. The benefits of peer assessment are that it:
Provides each student with a full explanation of what should have been done.
Requires students to understand better the material they are dealing with.
Develops students' critical evaluation skills.
Improves learning.
Allows students to see what others achieve.
Prepares students for a work environment in which they must assess the work of others.
Saves staff time and effort.'
Of course, like you indeed say it can be a great benefit 'if done well'.

Re: Grammar School Education
The last one, possibly, in the (very) long term, but I have my doubts.
Re: Grammar School Education
It's not just marking. It can be feedback from the class on individual/group work and involves the class understanding the marking criteria. That in itself is a huge challenge.
Re: Grammar School Education
I asked one of mine about this and peer marking seems to have waned a little in favour of self evaluation based on something which they call 'www/ebi'. This stands for 'what went well/even better if'. His opinion: 'even better if the teacher marks it' .
Re: Grammar School Education
Some children find it quite distressing (slight exaggeration) when they're neat and another child has scrawled a comment across their work. But I suppose some teachers can be untidy markers too.
