Do you know which schools you would like? Can you put them in priority order? Do you live in the right place or do you intend to move house?

Do you mean which grammar school would he like? If so, yes DS knows which grammar school he wants. we don't need to move, our house is approximately 15 mins drive to three grammar school in the area including his super selective choice.silverysea wrote:Do you know which schools you would like? Yes, my kids were/are home educated before going to secondary school - there are a few of us here If he's really not getting anything positive from school at the moment, then why not go for it?
Not really sure what sort of tips you want ... you will almost definitely be able to find other HEors in your area for support and social activities. You can concentrate on 11+ work for the next few months, and then work on whatever your son is interested in for the rest of y6. Or do a mixture of things now - that's the nice thing about HE, you can do what you want
Your son sounds very motivated and that will probably make for a very pleasant 18 months before he goes to secondary school. (Or you might enjoy HE so much he doesn't go!)
My children have slotted into school life without a hitch, and have not encountered any problem school due to being home educated.

Re: Home Education and 11+ preparation
Probably you should post in the surrey section specifically abouth the schools you want. Also in some areas there are tiny catchments and a 15 minute drive would mean no place!!!

Re: Home Education and 11+ preparation
hi apple33 I have two boys that I'm homeschooling since nursery, yr 6 and yr5. The eldest has a place at the grammar school of his choice, and the youngest is preparing to take the 11 plus this year.
I think homeschooling and 11 plus goes really well, you have time to relax while doing good solid work with them while they are fresh.
My friends who have children at school complain its really hard to do 11 plus work after school because
* children are tired
*have too much hmwrk
*after school clubs
This will be a nice bonding time for you and your son and he can work at a relaxed place while still being stimulated.
I hope it all goes well for you, good luck

Hi MamaBear, thank you for sharing your experience with me. As i am sure you can appriciate this is a big step for me to take, and hearing sucess stories like yours and aliportico is helping me beyond i can explain it .
I am sure like making any changes in life, the first steps is always the hardest one.
I guess i am lucky because DS is keen for home schooling too, and i have a very good gut feeling about HE.
I wish you all the best and i hope your son get to his choice of grammar school this year too. xx

Re: Home Education and 11+ preparation
You know your son better than anyone. You also will do a fantastic job with him because you have his best interests at heart. My eldest now year 11 did not do a day of schooling until year 7 and slotted into the top set of a Grammar school with no difficulty socialising (it's not as though we had him locked up for seven years away from other children!) DS2 has got a grammar place for Sep 14, also not having ever done a day of schooling. It's not for everyone but it is a rewarding experience enabling your child to develop at their own pace without gaps in their knowledge. There are plenty of activities for children to do to "socialise" and 11 plus prep can be incorporated into the weekly work without spending extra time after a long day at school. A new start for year 7 with a new group of people may be just what your son needs. Also no decision is irreversible. If you take him out now and it doesn't work for you, he can always go back for year 6. Trust your instincts!
