Y12 Maths Summer Schools

Post by 2Girlsmum »

Hi there,

DD1 in Y12 would love to participate in a Summer School for Maths, but she hasn't met the background criteria (1st generation Uni, free school dinners, area of low further education attendance etc) required by Imperial, UCL, Oxford, Cambridge and the Fulbright Trust. Does anyone know of good ones she could try for? It doesn't have to be free (though it would be nice!) but it does have to be good:)

Is she on the UKMT senior mentoring scheme:

Has she particpated in Team challenges?

It might be worth looking at UEA. They do a two night summer school in a number of subjects, but I'm not sure if there's a Maths summer school. If you don't qualify for a free place I think it's about £225. DS attended their chemistry summer school last July and really enjoyed it

Not sure they offer pure Maths but one of these courses might be of interest?

One of my friends' DD did one of the courses and found it really useful.

Thanks avidskier and ally, They both look interesting but one is too general and the other more engineering science-based. Some great suggestions though which we'll look into. I love this forum!

We're in a similar position with ds2. We know when ds1 applied for the medicine summer school with Sutton Trust and didn't qualify that Ds2 wouldn't qualify for the Mathematics Summer School either. But it didn't stop him applying.
He's also booked himself on a maths subject masterclass at a couple of universities listed in UCAS taster course section.
Not quite the same as the summer school but he will get some opportunity to problem solve with others.

Are you looking for a residential summer school, If not how about this? DS did the Young thinkers a few years ago and he really enjoyed it, I think it was held at UCL. DS wants to register for their Economics summer school.

It holds in London though so not sure how easily accessible it is for you?

Thanks Josa, Yes, I posted on two threads asking for help and it was suggested. The Maths one looks good. We live in North London so it would be very easy to get to. I'm waiting to hear if an outreach programme through an Independent school could help first though. thanks!
