morning oldbean. i agree. there will always be a few. i remember when dd and i were taken around woodford county high, one of the students (who i was chatting to) whispered to me how she didn't like it there!! which i thought was really funny as she was supposed to be selling me the place! she said she wanted to go to forest'. dd is known as a geek there, as are her friends who all take a pride in their academic work although there are plenty there who don't.... Honestly, some of the things dd has told me that have come out of the mouths belonging to the 'flashy brigade' would make you want to weep HOWEVER.... according to dd, there is only a small'ish group who are like that although she says that most of them are still nice enough but she has nothing in common with them (thank the lord....). I love the school. as we speak she is there today (even though they have broken up) doing prep for her d of e camping :)

We chose CCHS over woodford county and DD is have a wonderful time there. All girls are lovely and friendly and the teachers are great. The coach service means its easier (and believe it or not quicker) for her to get to CCHS then woodford by public transport - so that was an added bonus for us.

hope that helps.

Hello,

Will ask on this thread first before writing a new thread!

Wanted some info on Transport to Chelmsford? How to the kids cope? Do they miss out on activities?

What happens if a child gets detention (This came to my head just now!)

CCHS is an easy walk from Chelmsford railway station, so no need to miss out on after school activities or socialising with friends in town after school ( the centre of Chelmsford is a pretty social place for groups of students from various schools to meet up after 3.30 :) ). Lots of students, from schools all over the area, use the train and it is a lot more flexible than a 'one off' coach service. Learning to use public transport is also an important life skill and helps to make DC more confident and independent.

Toadmum I'm so confused still between the two :( My heart says CCHS but worried about the commute. But WCHS isn't exactly on our doorstep either, 40mins via 2 buses. The Dilema!

I've got the same struggle. But the reason why I prefer WCHS is that if anything happens, I can easily drop/collect her to/from the school as it takes 20mins by driving. However, Chelmsford, it takes 45mins with a good traffic.

A very sensible reason :) .

Oh the struggle is real but your point is so valid.

Toadmum where is your DC at? Do they travel in from far.

We live within the Borough of Southend on Sea. DD walks to sixth form at WHSG, having taken her GCSEs at SHSG (train 7 minutes, plus the walk at either end, about half an hour in total). DS2 splits the two miles to SHSB between the bus and a walk, or two buses if he is feeling lazy. Some boys walk all the way, but we're softhearted and let him have a season ticket.

DS1 is now at university, but he did the bus / walk thing up to GCSE, then the train with his sister for sixth form.

I am almost hoping that DS2 decides on WHSB for A levels, then we will have a full set  .

Don't forget that rail travel to the Essex grammar schools is available at a discounted rate - see the sticky at the top of the 'Essex' section.

DD just started at Woodford and found all the girls very friendly and the teachers nice except one but there's always one.

Quite heavy on homework compared to the comprehensives, she's supposed to be getting 1 to 1.5 hours a night, its more like 2 hours per night. There are clubs every night though limited numbers but as long as you're quick you can get them.

Not much time left for socialising after that but the girls certainly know how to text and DD had 318 messages from her class on just a few hours on Sunday and the texts start at 6am and finish around 11pm.

DD loves it apart from homework. She's one of only 3 white girls in her year but has found really good friends fine. She does tell me there is now one white boy in the sixth form which I'm intrigued about. DS would be in heaven in a girl's school.
