Question help please
A kilogram of bananas costs t pence
So 3 kilograms of bananas cost 3t pence
A kilogram of oranges costs 10p more than a kilogram of bananas
What is the cost in pence of four kilograms of oranges?
43t
44t
3t +40
4t +10
4t + 40 This is the answer Dd has marked, is this correct?
Thanks

A kilogram of oranges is t + 10 pence
So 4kg is 4(t + 10) = 4t + 40 a bit hard for 11+ imho

Re: Question help please
Thank you guest55. This is off an 11+ practice paper. Maths is not my strong point by any means but I could see some logic in dd's answer
Re: Question help please
Can I check 2 more questions please.
One 20pence coin weighs 5 grams
Isabelle has 1 kilogram of 20 pence coins
What is the total value of Isabelle's coins?
Dd has put £40 but I think it's £200
A loaf weighing 400g is in th3 shape of a cuboid.
The cuboid has length 16cm, height 7cm and width 7cm.
Which is the closest estimate for the volume of 1g of the loaf.
Dd put 5cm3. I have no idea where to start in working this one out.
Thanks in advance, I promise that's it now!

Re: Question help please
How many coins are there in 1kg? Each coin weighs 5 grams, so what is 5 divided by 1000?kal12003 wrote:One 20pence coin weighs 5 grams Isabelle has 1 kilogram of 20 pence coins What is the total value of Isabelle's coins?
If each coin in the bag is worth 20p, how much is the bag worth? The number of coins in the bag (200) times the value of each coin (20p) equals 4000p or £40.00.
So unless I've missed something, your DD is correct. Why do you think it's £200?
Re: Question help please
Thank you. I am so frazzled with this maths paper. I was only getting as far as the first step I think so divided 1000 by 5 to get to 200 but clearly missed step 2! Thank you so much

Re: Question help please
We are given the volume of 400g of loaf - it is 7x7x16. This is (I hope) 784cm cubed.kal12003 wrote:A loaf weighing 400g is in th3 shape of a cuboid. The cuboid has length 16cm, height 7cm and width 7cm.Which is the closest estimate for the volume of 1g of the loaf.
If you are rounding quite broadly, you could say that it is approximately 800cm3. That would mean that 400g=800 cm3, so 1g would be 2cm3.
I don't know what options you were given though so I don't know close the estimate is meant to be.

We are asked to estimatekal12003 wrote: A loaf weighing 400g is in th3 shape of a cuboid.

Dd put 5cm3.
Volume = 16 x 7 x 7
1g vol = [16 x 7 x 7]/400 approx [16 x 50]/400 which is 2 cm^3
Note I did not work out the volume, just rounded and simplified.
Re: Question help please
Thank you both. Dd has her answer as 5cm3. I'm not sure how she has got to this but will show her the explanation now. Thank you both
