Dorset 11 Plus

The New Schools Admissions Code, by law from 2012 , due to take effect for admissions for Entry in September 2013, states that schools must take all reasonable steps to inform parents of the outcome of tests before the closing deadline for applications on October 31st 2012.

There are four grammar schools in Dorset: two in Bournemouth and two in Poole.

Test Types

The tests are set to be appropriate for the pupils in their final year of the KS2 national curriculum. Tests take account of the fact that candidates may not have covered all areas. All three tests are multiple choice format.

Maths Test (50 minutes) – is based on work which candidates would normally cover during Key Stage 2 of the national curriculum. It covers most aspects of Key Stage 2, up to level 5, with some questions aimed at level 6.

English (45 minutes) – covers comprehension, vocabulary and punctuation.

English Essay (30 minutes) – is intended to test ability to spell, punctuate, organise ideas, use a variety of syntax and be aware of the effect on audience of the composition of the piece. This paper is set in conformity with Key Stage 2 of the national curriculum.

Verbal Reasoning (50 minutes)- is intended to test a pupil’s academic potential and indicate areas of strengths or weakness.
